This D was made to replicate as closely as possible the famous 1930s guitars. I followed original instrument measurements and specs from several sources to achieve for this client the classic sound of what is regarded as the best of the dreadnoughts. This one is in more modern woods - the very finest “Brazillian-like” Indian Rosewood and ideally structured Alaskan spruce. For authentic looks and functionality I have used a tortoiseshell plastic pickguard but have drawn a line in the sand at the prospect of using plastic binding. The Multi-layered maple binding does a much better job and looks good too. You can see a view of the high quality Indian rosewood and the maple binding at the tail of this guitar by clicking on the main photo. The tuners are high quality open geared Gotoh SD 70s.
The sound is rich with full depth basses and strong fundamental trebles. It sounds like one of those beautifully produced recordings of modern master bluegrass guitarists. I can build this guitar in Adirondack spruce and Brazillian Rosewood, but at a significantly higher price than my standard rosewood guitars. I must say, this one is hard to beat. You can see another herringbone D here.
